Located nearly in the middle of this small country Kigali is not only the capital, but the most important business and commercial center, as well as the main port of entry. The airport is only 6 miles outside the capital and is connected to the neighboring countries of Tanzania, Uganda and Burundi by good roads. The city boasts hotels of all categories and has a varied selection of restaurants. Often called the city of a thousand hills it is located at about 1500 meters and lies just south of the equator. The city is rich in flora but there is not a lot of sightseeing to be done. It is considered a very safe city and offers easy access to the rest of the country. Worth a visit is the Muslim quarter and the market of Caplaki close to the city with a terrific range of souvenir stalls offering an enormous range of beautifully made local handicrafts.

  Butare

Until 1965 Butare was the largest and most important city of Rwanda. It was taken over by Kigali which lies 135 km. to the north. It has the largest university in the country and is considered today still to be the cultural and intellectual center of Rwanda. It is home to the National Museum which houses the best ethnographic collection in East Africa. This shows the pre-colonial lifestyle right through to the development of today’s modern state. While here a visit to nearby Nyabisndu is a must. This is the traditional seat of Rwanda’s feudal monarchy and was formerly known as Nyanza. The enormous domed construction of the Royal Palace is made from only traditional materials. It is now a museum and has been restored to its 19th century beauty.
