Compared to the rest of Rwanda this is a low altitude park on the border with Tanzania. The park is dominated by swamps and lakes following the course of the Akagera River. There is great diversity of wildlife in the park. Herds of Zebra, Topis, Impalas, Common Elands, Oribis and Bohor Reedbucks, Waterbucks and Sitatungas. The swamps and waterways contain Hippos and Crocodiles. Lions, Leopard, Hyena and Jackal might be seen. Roan Antelopes and Black Rhinos as well as Elephants can probably be seen. Over 500 species of bird have been recorded and the area lies on the migration route from Europe to South Africa. Shoebills, Grey Headed Kingfishers, Africa and Eurasian Golden Orioles, White Crested Helmet Shrikes and Red Faced, Crested, Black- Collared and Double-Toothed Barbets will be seen in the woodlands.
